about

Heartfelt alt-rock song written by Australian singer-songwriter Leah Chynoweth-Tidy (aka Kissing The Flint) with infectious guitar hooks and a resonating message. A music mission to rock the foundations of a bureaucratic lack of support for the undervalued Arts.

This call-to-arms song formed in 2020, seeking answers that still haven’t been given by those in power in 2021.

lyrics

Silent danger on the wind
Gradually all the Business Open signs were taken in
The songs and music on the street
Began to drift away with every fearful heartbeat

One hundred or less
That’s what the men in charge told us would be best
You can sing your songs but you must stay a distance away
They gave us hope and then they took it all away
The very next day

The bars and restaurants tried to hold on tight alongside us
While it was still OK to keep our heads afloat and make no fuss
All we lived for was living to play
Then a crowd of losers on a beach stole all our dreams away

One hundred or less
That’s what the faceless men in suit and ties told us was best
Play your guitar but make sure you’re at least 2 metres away
They gave us small hope and then it was gone
The very next day, yeah, they wouldn’t let us play

Tumbleweeds in our humble bank account
We ask for help but every time we scream and shout
Little funding for the Arts it seems
But plenty dollars there to buy more submarines
Lord, it makes me scream, you know what I mean?

So many in this world think music’s just a dreamer’s choice
But it’s the way we earn our living and it’s our only voice
When times are good, they build us up and follow us round town
Now times are hard and people look away as we fall down

One hundred or less
That’s what the faceless men in suit and ties told us was best
Play your guitar but make sure you’re at least 2 metres away
Gave us some hope but then it was gone
The very next day

One hundred or less
That’s what the men in charge told us would be best, yeah yeah
You can sing your songs but you must stay a distance away
They gave us hope and then they took it all away
The very next day

Why couldn’t we just play
You took our hope away
Thought we’d get to fight another day
Why can’t we just play
You took our dreams away
Took our hopes away
Why won’t you let us play?
